Dave Mason

Dave Mason started piping at King Edward VII School, Johannesburg, South Africa in 1973 as
a 12 year old under the tutelage of Pipe Major Sandy Mallen, late of the Transvaal Scottish
Regiment and then Pipe Major Chris Mulinder of the SA Irish Regiment.

After a school career which saw him Pipe Major of the school band for two successful years,
Dave joined the SA Air Force. After three years, he returned to piping as both a band and a
solo player taking most of the top professional prizes.

In 1996, Dave traveled to the UK and competed in bands and solo events. He has traveled
widely with his wife, Michele, herself a side drummer. They are currently in Cincinnati for a
second term.

Dave has received instruction from PM Angus MacDonald, Scots Guards, Rob Wallace and
John Wilson at the College of Piping, PM Bill Robertson, NZ, James McIntosh and Alasdair
Gillies. He holds a Senior Piping Certificate from College of Piping and the Tutor’s Certificate.
Dave has competed in top level competitions winning the Open Piobaireachd at Ligonier as
well as first prizes in the light music at The Atholl and Breadalbane Gathering in Aberfeldy,
